Prevention and Breast Health

Prevention and Breast Health
There are more than twice as many new breast cancer cases annually than new cases of cancer in any other site.
Studies from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) have shown that a third of all breast cancer cases can be prevented in Europe by maintaining a healthy lifestyle. That would mean that 192,00 of the 576,300 new cases of breast cancer each year in the WHO Europe region could be prevented.
Secondary prevention and early detection

Secondary prevention and early detection
Secondary prevention refers to techniques used to detect breast cancer even at its earliest stages. This includes imaging methods such as mammography screening as well as breast awareness. Europa Donna advocates for all European women to have access to nationwide population-based mammography screening programmes conducted in accordance with the European Guidelines on Breast Cancer Screening and Diagnosis developed by the European Commission Initiative on Breast Cancer (ECIBC), which are updated regularly based on the latest scientific evidence.
Primary Prevention and Breast Health

Primary Prevention and Breast Health
Primary prevention consists of a variety of approaches that help prevent/protect an individual from developing breast cancer. A growing body of evidence shows the link between healthy lifestyle choices and a lower risk of developing breast cancer.
According to these studies, excess body weight and physical inactivity deserve special attention, since they account for about one-third of all breast cancer cases. As a result, being active, eating a well-balanced diet and maintaining a normal body weight are three simple but crucial lifestyle choices.
Preventing Recurrence

Preventing Recurrence
Numerous studies have shown that healthy lifestyle factors can reduce breast cancer recurrence and improve outcomes. Having a healthy lifestyle may also help alleviate some of the effects of breast cancer and its treatment.
Europa Donna is involved in research projects to gather more data on this topic and calls for more high-quality studies in this area.
